Join art historian and Thomas Cole scholar Alan Wallach, Ph.D., for a five-day seminar exploring Cole’s career as a painter of American and European landscapes, historical works, and religious allegories. Through close looking and discussion, participants will examine Cole’s artistic development, major paintings, influences, and legacy within the context of 19th-century art and culture.
Sessions run Monday through Friday from 10 am–12:30 pm, with coffee and pastries provided. Advance registration is required by June 1, 2026, and a reading list will be shared prior to the seminar.
Alan Wallach has written and taught extensively on Thomas Cole, the Hudson River School, and American art history for more than fifty years, and is the recipient of the College Art Association’s Distinguished Teaching of Art History award.
The Thomas Cole National Historic Site is the former home of Hudson River School of Art founder, Thomas Cole. Located in the village of Catskill, the house, called Cedar Grove, and Cole's studio are open for tours, events, and workshops throughout the year.
