Sunday, Jul 20th, 2-4 pm
Join art historian H. Daniel Peck, PhD, for a talk on the spotlight exhibition On Trees: Georgia O'Keeffe & Thomas Cole. The exhibition centers on Georgia O’Keeffe’s Dead Tree Bear Lake Taos (1929) and Thomas Cole’s Hunters in a Landscape (c. 1825), alongside additional paintings and sketches by Cole. For both artists, the expressive, human-like qualities of trees sparked a creative response during their first encounters with landscapes that would go on to define their careers and shape American art.
H. Daniel Peck is the John Guy Vassar Professor Emeritus of English at Vassar College and former chair of the American Studies Program. An interdisciplinary scholar, he is the author of Thomas Cole's Refrain: The Paintings of Catskill Creek (Cornell, 2019), which inspired the exhibition of the same name at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site. His work on Georgia O’Keeffe includes the article “Roof with Snow,” published in American Art Magazine by the Smithsonian. His literary scholarship includes Thoreau’s Morning Work and The Pastoral Moment in Cooper’s Fiction, both from Yale University Press.
