Northeastern Ethnobotany

    • Sat, 06/06/2026
  • 408 Lake Mills Road, Cairo, NY 12431

Saturday, June 6th; 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

For countless generations, Indigenous Peoples of the Northeast have relied on native plants for food, medicine, fiber, dyes, tools, and more. Join us for a guided walk through meadow and forest habitats as we identify native plants and trees and explore their traditional and modern uses. Along the way, you'll have the chance to touch, smell, and taste what we discover, including a tea made from traditional native herbs.

About the Guide: Justin Wexler is an ethnoecologist who has spent more than 20 years researching the history, culture, and land stewardship practices of Native Peoples in the Hudson and Delaware Valleys. While not Native himself, his work draws on extensive academic research, collaboration with descendant communities, and a lifelong study of native plants. Through Wild Hudson Valley, Justin and Anna help create opportunities for Lenape and Mohican people to share their languages, culture, and perspectives in their ancestral homeland. Proceeds from this event will help cover travel expenses for Native guests visiting this summer.
