Film summary: Like many rivers around the world, the Hudson—America’s First River and birthplace of the American environmental movement—once thrived as a vital resource for transportation and sustenance but also suffered from years of pollution and overuse. The river paid a steep price, battling widespread contamination. For nearly three decades, Captain John—its poet laureate and vigilant “eyes on the river”—has been on the front lines of these struggles, confronting industrial and human pollution while enduring setbacks and celebrating hard-won victories. Though progress has been made, protecting a river is an ongoing fight. Today, John Lipscomb is one of more than 300 “Keepers” worldwide dedicated to safeguarding their waterways.
