Over the Top Ways to "Do" Fall in the Great Northern Catskills

Is it the cool air, distinct scenery, maybe the sweaters? Whatever it is, the Catskills are one of the best places in New York State to experience fall. Why? Because we go overboard when it comes to celebrating the autumnal equinox. Apple picking? Check! Breathtaking fall foliage hikes? Double check.

No matter how you choose to enjoy the changing seasons, here are some of the best ways to experience an over-the-top autumn in the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County!

Apples in Greene County

Apple Picking & Pumpkin Patches

Celebrate fall with a trip to a Greene County farm! Throughout the season, Boehm Farm in Climax offers pick-your-own apples—Empire, Mutsu, and Macintosh are a few of their varieties. Find the perfect pumpkin at their pumpkin patch, and don’t leave the farm without trying their apple cider doughnuts, a classic fall favorite.

Hiking in the Catskills during the fall

Fall Foliage Hikes

What’s better than seeing the bold yellow, orange, and red colors of the changing leaves during fall? Seeing them from a mountaintop after a rewarding hike or from a tree-lined trail. Follow along the Kaaterskill Clove Experience, where you’ll find scenic vistas and learn about the unique history of the region. Also, explore Huckleberry Point, a 4.6-mile roundtrip hike near Tannersville that offers distinct fall foliage views of the Catskill Mountains.

motorcycling in the Catskills in the fall

Motorcycling & Driving Tours

Tune up your bikes and hit the road on a picturesque motorcycling tour. Ride along Mountain Clove run to see sweeping mountain views and shops in small towns throughout the 73.3-mile route. For a shorter route, try the Emerald Isle Tour—which is 57.9 miles—through the countryside. The Grand Tour of the Catskills is the ultimate route at 143.2 miles. Make your way up mountainsides, along rolling hills, and through quaint towns. All of these routes are ideal for scenic drives too!

For an on-foot adventure, wander the grounds of Mountain Top Arboretum in Tannersville, home to 178 acres of trails, wetlands, and gardens—perfect for viewing seasonal plants and foliage.
