Join Susan Fox Rogers for a fascinating talk and walk! She’ll highlight the early women birdwatchers who peered through opera glasses, stood up against the plume industry that threatened Great Egrets, and documented species from Iowa’s Chimney Swifts to Wisconsin’s Prairie Chickens. Their stories of determination and passion remind us how small actions can spark meaningful change. Following the talk, Susan will lead a short bird walk, inviting participants to share observations of the birds we see and hear together.
Susan Fox Rogers is a writer, birder, teacher, editor, rock climber, and kayaker who writes about the natural world and outdoor adventures both big and small. Her first book, My Reach: A Hudson River Memoir, explores the Hudson River from the perspective of her kayak, weaving together history, natural history, and personal reflection. Her second book, Learning the Birds: A Mid-life Adventure, chronicles the first three years of her late-in-life journey into birding, from the Hudson Valley to Florida, Arizona, and Alaska. Filled with bird adventures, historical detours, and personal stories, the book has been praised as engaging even for non-birders—though readers often finish eager to grab their binoculars.
Copies of Susan's books will be available for sale at the conclusion of the program. Registration is free for members and a $10 donation for non-members. Registration is required.
