Join us on Saturday, August 23rd 1-4:30 pm

This program, offered in partnership with the Mountain Top Arboretum and the New York Flora Association, welcomes participants of all experience levels to learn shrub identification in a relaxed, supportive setting. Together we’ll practice using key tools to identify native shrubs during the growing season, focusing on common New York species.

Shrub Identification is based on two premises:

  1. Each shrub species has a suite of characteristics—leaf and twig arrangement, bark color and texture, growth form, odor, etc.—that distinguish it from others.

  2. By asking logical, consistent questions, one can focus on the traits that separate species, such as branching patterns, leaf edges, or preferred habitats.

The workshop is led by Dan, President of the New York Flora Association, longtime botanist, and retired Adirondack Park Agency supervisor with decades of experience in ecology, wetlands, and plant identification. Registration is free but required.
