John Burroughs' Woodchuck Lodge

Welcome to Woodchuck Lodge, the cherished abode of John Burroughs, renowned Literary Naturalist.

"These hills fathered and mothered me. I am blood of their blood and bone of their bone, and why should I not go back to them in my last years?"

  • John Burroughs, 1910

Constructed in 1862 by John's brother, Woodchuck Lodge stands proudly on the eastern edge of the Burroughs family farm. The homestead where both brothers spent their formative years lies a mile up the road and was erected when John was just 13 years old. In retirement, Woodchuck Lodge served as John's tranquil sanctuary.

A leisurely stroll up the road from Woodchuck Lodge leads to John Burroughs' final resting place at Boyhood Rock, completing the poignant journey through his life and legacy.
