Nutmeg Soaring

Picture the northern Catskill ridges spread out beneath you, Catskill Creek winding through the valley, and no sound but the wind over the wings. At the Nutmeg Soaring Association, a volunteer-run, nonprofit glider club at Freehold Airport, that’s an ordinary weekend.

The club flies every weekend from mid-April through early November, so you can ride spring air currents, summer thermals, or the full sweep of fall foliage. The airfield sits beside Catskill Creek beneath the Catskill ridges, about 20 minutes west of the village of Catskill and 30 minutes north of Hunter Mountain.

Take a demo ride
No experience needed. Your flight begins with a briefing in the clubhouse at the Freehold Airport on how gliders fly and what to expect. Then a towplane pulls you aloft, the towline releases, and the engine noise falls away. Your instructor points out landmarks as you glide over forests, river valleys, and high peaks, then brings you down for a gentle landing back at the field.

Learn to fly
Caught the bug? Nutmeg Soaring welcomes newcomers with full flight instruction and a path to membership, in a club built on safety, learning, and community.
