The Catskills gave birth to America's first great art movement — and the landscapes that inspired it are still here to explore.

In the 1820s, Thomas Cole arrived in the village of Catskill and began painting the wild scenery of the mountains above. His luminous canvases of Kaaterskill Clove, the Catskill Escarpment, and the Hudson Valley launched the Hudson River School, America’s first homegrown art movement. Today, you can visit Cole’s home, stand at the exact viewpoints he painted, and follow a trail that connects the key sites of this remarkable artistic legacy.
From galleries and museums to historic sites and live performance, the cultural life of the Catskills runs deep.
