Celebrate 125 years of the Catskill Public Library and help look ahead to the next 125! Join the library for a free day of history, music, food, art, and family activities marking the anniversary of the cornerstone of its historic Carnegie building. The celebration will feature the unveiling of a new oil painting of the library by local artist Jim Ebersole, live music by the Catskill Mountain String Band, and a presentation by Greene County Historian Jonathan Palmer and local historian Ted Hilscher exploring Catskill in the early 1900s and the history of the library. Enjoy lunch and dessert bites, browse displays highlighting the library’s history, and learn about the upcoming CPL125 Construction Project, which will restore and modernize the building while preserving its historic character. Guests can also pick up limited-edition library cards featuring Ebersole’s painting, enjoy special activities for kids, and receive party favors while supplies last. Come celebrate the library’s first 125 years and discover what’s ahead for its next chapter. 11am-4pm
Saturday, October 10, 11am-2pm Create your own block print inspired by the interiors, textiles, and decorative wall paintings of Thomas Cole’s 19th-century home. Begin with a special tour of the historic Main House to explore the patterns and hand-painted borders Cole selected for his home, then head to the Storehouse to create your own linocut and 19th-century-inspired bandbox featuring your custom design. All materials are included. The workshop takes place in the historic Storehouse, adjoining Cole’s original painting studio. All ages are welcome; some sharp tools will be used. Participants are encouraged to bring lunch. Coffee, tea, and snacks are available for purchase at the Cole Center.
Join Graham C. Boettcher, Ph.D., Director & CEO of the Norman Rockwell Museum, for What Dreams May Come: Thomas Cole and the Promise of America, a lecture exploring Thomas Cole’s lasting influence on American art, identity, and our understanding of the American landscape. Boettcher previously served as Director and CEO of the Birmingham Museum of Art and has a long-standing connection to Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School. His scholarship and curatorial work have explored American landscape painting, the German Romantics, and the idea of the “natural sublime,” including contributions to the landmark exhibition American Sublime: Landscape Painting in the United States, 1820–1880 at Tate Britain. His work with Cole includes curating exhibitions featuring American landscape art and the last public exhibition of Cole’s 1826 masterpiece Falls of the Kaaterskill. In 2020, he was honored by the Thomas Cole National Historic Site and delivered its Annual Beecher Lecture on Cole’s Hunters in a Landscape. He now returns to the site to share his insights in person. The Salon takes place 2-3:30pm. The Sunday Salon series features monthly tours and lectures with leading thinkers on American art. Admission includes the salon, access to the historic buildings, and special exhibitions, open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
