Johnson’s Barbecue in Tannersville serves wood-smoked brisket, ribs, and seasonal sides along the water at Rip Van Winkle Lake. Open Friday through Sunday with live music and games, it’s a great spot for barbecue with a view.
Johnson’s sits along the Huckleberry Trail, a rail trail of roughly 2.7 miles that follows the old Huckleberry Railroad line and passes through the park at Rip Van Winkle Lake. It’s a flat, mostly shaded route for walking, biking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing, with parking on Lake Road next to the park, so it’s an easy place to finish a hike or ride and walk your food off.
You can also stroll into the nearby village of Tannersville, the painted village in the sky, to browse the shops along its colorful Main Street.
