Nutmeg Soaring

Nestled in the scenic hills of the northern Catskill Mountains, the Nutmeg Soaring Association offers an unforgettable experience of silent flight above New York’s majestic landscapes. Located 0.7 miles west of Freehold (on County Road 67, Freehold NY 12431) — roughly 15 minutes north of Hunter Mountain and 15 minutes northwest of the town of Catskill — this volunteer-operated, non‐profit glider club is dedicated to the art, science, and safety of soaring.

Why visit

  • The club is set on the tranquil grounds of the Freehold Airport, beside the beautiful Catskill Creek and beneath the dramatic ridges of the Catskills, making for especially scenic flights.

  • With soaring operations every weekend from mid-April through early November, you’ll find yourself gliding above the ridges during peak seasons of spring air currents, summer thermals and fall foliage.

  • The experience is both exhilarating and peaceful—no engine roar, just the gentle whoosh of air as you move with the thermals, giving you a unique aerial perspective of the region.

Seasonal scenic flights in the Catskills

From April to November, Nutmeg Soaring opens its doors to those eager to taste the freedom of glider flight. Whether you’re a visitor looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience or a budding pilot interested in instruction, the association offers introductory “demo rides” by appointment. Imagine soaring silently above the ridgelines of the Catskills, enjoying sweeping vistas of forests, river valleys and high peaks — all while being safely guided by experienced volunteer instructors in a glider.

What to expect

  • You'll begin with a ground briefing in the clubhouse: how gliders fly, what to expect, safety guidelines.

  • Then you’ll launch via aerotow and climb into the sky as you leave the runway behind and gain elevation.

  • Once aloft, you’ll feel the unique sensation of unpowered flight. The instructor will point out landmarks, share the soaring experience and let you feel the rhythm of the air beneath the wings.

  • When your flight ends, you’ll enjoy a gentle descent back to the Freehold field, landing smoothly and stepping back onto the ground with a new perspective.
