João Salomão: CIRCO DE  VISÕES

Gallery 495 is thrilled to announce our upcoming exhibition, "João Salomão: CIRCO DE VISÕES (CIRCUS OF VISIONS)," on display from June 1, 2024, to July 27, 2024. This solo showcase will feature a stunning collection of new works, including paintings, works on paper, and sculpture. "Circo de Visões" encapsulates the symbolic essence of Salomão’s artistry within sensational landscapes that come alive in his spiritual circus.

Hailing from Rio de Janeiro and born into a family immersed in the tropicalia movement, João Salomão relocated to New York City in the early 90s. Inspired by the Lower East Side’s music, skateboarding, and graffiti scenes, Salomão infuses his abstract sensibilities with observations from daily life. Elements of street culture are intricately woven into his work, transforming into energetic compositions of color, shape, and texture.

The latest creations incorporate an eclectic array of found objects, including construction site remnants, scrap metals, and journal entries from Salomão’s father, artist and poet Jorge Salomão. These additional materials breathe new life into the artworks, with spray paint applications on canvas symbolizing utility markings on asphalt. The gestural application of paint, charcoal, and fabric reflects Salomão’s spiritual journey, rhythmically composed as a meditative practice that explores the harmony within chaos.

In addition to paintings and works on paper, Salomão will unveil "Trituração," a sculptural homage to Marcel Duchamp’s iconic 1913 Bicycle Wheel. His connection to Duchamp echoes his exploration of avant-garde artists from Brazil’s tropicalia movement. As a space dedicated to artist expression, Gallery 495 celebrates the freedom and depth of Salomão’s evolving oeuvre. Delving deeper into his artistic exploration, Salomão navigates his daily experiences through symbolism and spirituality, transcending reality to paint a world of greater harmony.
