Secret Golf Courses in the Catskills – Where Conditions Are Excellent and the Views Unbelievable

Awe-inspiring views, sustained commitment to quality, and impeccable condition courses, whether you’re a scratch golfer or a high handicapper – welcome to the Great Northern Catskills.

Ok, so the Great Northern Catskills' golf courses aren't technically secret, you can find them on our Catskills golf courses page, and Google, and there are roads signs pointing you in the right direction so you don't get lost.

It's more of a metaphorical secret. We say "secret" because that's the feeling you get when you're on these courses. You're on the back nine with your best buds, you're playing a great game, or not, and you're in the mountains. No one's on a cell phone, the greens are true and fast, the fairways are in peak condition, and hordes of cleated hooligans haven't hogged every hole for an hour while you waited for your turn.

Golfing in the Catskills is in many ways, a return to the golden age of the game. When Arnie Palmer was earning his nickname as the "King" and mixing up a refreshing-as-hell beverage, and Annika Sorenstam was earning her reputation as the "greatest female golfer of all-time."

The 70s are back in the best way possible, on the golf course, in the Great Northern Catskills. Our courses boast the best conditions around, and we polled some of our course managers to help us prove it:

Thunderhart Golf Course and Resort in the Catskill Mountains
Thunderhart at Sunny Hill & Sunny Hill Resort’s GM Kevin Smith:

"Thunderhart is a championship golf course with 18 holes, four sets of tees, and a par 72 set in the Catskill Basin. We're surrounded by the Catskill Mountains, and have a variety of doglegs, difficult Par 3's, and a number of ponds and sand traps. Our course plays close to 6,500 yards from the tips and is both challenging and ascetically pleasing. Maintaining our 250-acre property is a labor of love. Our highly trained superintendent, Erik Nicholsen and his staff are skilled in what they do, really the best of the best. Every day they're out on the course mowing, maintaining and visually inspecting each green, each fairway, every acre, every day. We want to offer our guests the best conditions, in the best scenery, in the best area for golf in New York State: The Great Northern Catskills."

Christman’s Windham House Golf Course in the Catskills
Christman’s Windham House Golf Pro Erik Leach:

"This spring is one of the earliest and best spring's we've ever seen due to the mild winter, so we're looking forward to getting our courses in top condition. Our course Superintendent Dave does an outstanding job, and year after year our customers say we have the best greens around. Dave goes out every day, does a daily check and inspection to make sure whatever needs to happen, happens. We just invested in a new spray rig to help us maintain the conditions across the two courses, including the Mountain Course's 7,150 yards. Not only is it one of the most scenic courses in the East, with the mountains and forests surrounding the property, but it's maintained to tournament conditions every day."
