Great Northern Catskills Family-Friendly Attractions

Just two hours north of New York City, the Great Northern Catskills offer trip-worthy family-friendly activities in the mountains and beyond. Like 600 feet above the ground, going 50 miles an hour, tethered to a zipline on the fastest, longest, highest zipline canopy tour in North America. Or sledding over snow-covered trails during a snowmobile tour with Rip Van Winkle Snowmobilig & ATV Rentals.

In winter, Windham Mountain and Hunter Mountain offer some of the best alpine skiing and off-hill activities available in New York State for families. Windham delivers great alpine terrain for all abilities, and off-hill amenities including ice skating, and snowtubing, so the whole family can get away and play. Hunter boasts the largest snowtubing park in New York State, as well as moonlit ziplining tours and more.

Adventure in the Catskills

Traditionally, mountains are places of adventure, the places we journey to, to get away from it all, to find ourselves, to explore. How convenient then that the Catskills Mountains are so close, and still so rugged that you may just wander into one of the region’s literary folk heroes, Rip Van Winkle, waking from another 20-year nap? Winter brings extreme adventure in the Catskills, from black-diamond skiing and riding, to ice climbing and winter ziplining at Hunter Mountain. It also affords ample opportunity and reason to explore the area's microbreweries and wine tasting rooms for an après ski warm-up.

On the other side of the adventurous travel spectrum, Greene County offers an electrifying lineup of events and festivals every summer, from the Annual Taste of Country Music Festival at Hunter Mountain, to the competitive cycling races including the UCI Windham World Cup.

Arts & Culture in Greene County

The deep Kaaterskill Clove of the Catskills is the cradle of American art. We say that a lot, but what do we actually mean? Well, it was here that Thomas Cole, a budding artist from England, began painting the Catskill landscape, adding deeply moving tones and a flourish of divinity to the rolling hills, clouded skies and majestic waterfalls. Today, you can experience the mountains just as Cole did, in all their untamed beauty.

Visit the Thomas Cole National Historic Site, and continue your artistic exploration on the Hudson River School of Art Trail, stopping at Kaaterskill Falls, and the many art galleries, museums and historic sites along the way. Enjoy a scenic Skyride at Hunter Mountain, or head to Windham Vineyards and Winery for a tasting flight of New York State wines.
