Hunting in the Great Northern Catskills

Find some of New York's best black bear and small game in the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County.

Home to deep forests, tall mountains and scenic river valleys ideal for small and big game hunting, Greene County provides easy access to acres of pristine wildlife hunting across vast stretches of mountaintop wilderness. Hunt all public lands in Greene County, as well as New York City Department of Environmental Protection lands, via access points in Palenville off of Route 23A, Round Top off of Winter Clove Road, and from several points along Route 23 in Windham. 

Waterfowl are plentiful in Greene County, with many of the region's lakes, ponds and creeks – including the Hudson River – falling within the Atlantic Flyway. This migratory route makes for incredible duck and goose hunting. Waterfowl season begins in September and lasts through October in Greene County.

Catskill Hunting Guides and Preserves

Greene County is home to several Catskill hunting guides specializing in big and small game hunts to ensure that each hunting trip is rewarding. 

Copper Don's Guide Service out of Windham offers turkey hunting packages during the spring and fall seasons, as well as upland bird hunting for grouse and pheasant September through March. Bowhunters are welcome, and all packages include breakfast, transportation, and the use of firearms and ammunition. Hunting rates with lodging start at $275 per person.

Saenger Outdoor Sports, LLC offers hunting trips in the Catskills for turkey, deer, bear, coyote and small game. Saenger's licensed guides specialize in Eastern Wild Turkey hunting for all abilities, from first-time hunters to experienced marksmen. Based out of Elka Park, rates start at $200 for a one day, one-on-one guided hunting trip. 

Hull-O Farms Pheasant Game Preserve in Durham offers a true camp experience for modern sportsmen and sportswomen, complete with cozy accommodations and farm-fresh meals. With 300 acres of countryside to explore, the farm's experienced staff provides a unique Catskill hunting trip, including stalking and tower shoots for pheasants, turkey and white-tailed deer.

Catskill Mountain Guide Service in Windham specializes in Catskill Mountain turkey hunting, large and small game hunting, as well as coyote tracking.

Bow hunters can hone archery skills at the Coxsackie Gun and Bow Shop's simulated indoor archery range called TechnoHunt, which allows archers to use their own bow and arrows for shooting at a screen of animals.

New York State Hunting Regulations

All first time hunters are required by the state to complete a 10-hour Hunter Education Course.
