Catskills Arts & Culture

Hailed as a “new mecca for artisans” by the New York Times, there’s never been a better time to explore arts and theater in the Great Northern Catskills.

Start in the town of Catskill, not far off of I-87 Exit 21, where the rebirth has taken hold. Former mills and a lumberyard now host artisan spaces, housing everything from woodworkers and workshops, to one of the nation's leading contemporary performing arts institutions.

Coming in 2018, The Lumberyard Contemporary Performing Arts, formerly known as American Dance Institute, will open its doors in Catskill, bringing a new wave of world-class performances. At the Bridge Street Theatre in downtown Catskill, magic shows, theatrical performances, and psychics await your attendance. Main Street restaurants offer cozy atmosphere and old world cuisine, creating an affect that is at once welcoming and new.

Renowned as the home of Thomas Cole, the "Father of American Art," who inspired the Hudson River School of Art, Catskill is a gateway to the rest of Greene County, a region celebrated for its natural beauty.

For centuries, the Catskills' raw landscape attracted artists from around the world, and nowhere is this more evident that in the colorful, cheerfully painted streets of Tannersville. Home to the Orpheum Theater & Performing Arts Center, a newly renovated state-of-the-art space hosting dance festivals and music events, and a member of the Catskill Mountain Foundation. Dedicated to bringing high-quality artistic performances, workshops, programs and gallery space to all ages, the Orpheum offers a variety of winter events, including film and theater performances.

This spring, explore the artistic side of the Catskills along the Kaaterskill Clove Experience, a self-guided tour of the area's historical and artistically important hot spots. Learn about Washington Irving's beloved rapscallion Rip Van Winkle, visit art galleries and Catskills museums, and spend time wandering through gardens and groves that inspired the painters, poets, and philosophers that helped shape the nation's appreciations for the Catskills.
