Escarpment Trail at North-South Lake

A challenging 23.9 mile hike that makes for a great 3 day back pack trip. Access the trail head on Schutt Road off North-South Lake Road in Haines Falls.  If hiking the entire trail be sure to leave one car at other end of trail in East Windham for convenience.

Follow the blue marked trail to see some of the most scenic areas of the Catskill Mountains travelling up summits over 3000' high, including Blackhead Mountain with heights of 3940'.


Day Hiking Options:

From North-South Lake Park to Boulder Rock, Catskill Mountain House, Artist Rock, and Sunset Rock.

The Kaaterskill Clove is a mountain ravine of picture-postcard beauty and preserved in history by some of America's greatest landscape artists. Dotted with forests, waterfalls and scenic vistas, the Clove is nationally recognized as one of New York State’s premier natural resources. The unique natural geological formation of the Kaaterskill Clove provides visitors from near and far with extensive opportunities for hiking, outdoor recreation activities, and cultural and heritage experiences.   

The Kaaterskill Clove Experience is part of the Catskill Mountain Heritage Trail, which extends from the Olana State Historic Site in Hudson (Columbia County) to the Woodchuck Lodge (the summer home of John Burroughs, America’s most prominent and adored naturalist-essaying) located in Roxbury (Delaware County).
