Located in the middle of the Hudson River, between the city of Hudson , NY and the village of Athens , NY , the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse , was finished being built and put into service in 1874. It remains an active aid to navigation today. With its spiral staircases, working fog bell and wonderful architecture, is one of only seven remaining on the river. A climb to the lantern room will give one of the most incredible views of the surrounding land and waterscapes , with a 360 degree perspective. Displays and artifacts help tell the history of the lighthouse and what it was like to be a  lightkeeper there. In particular , one lightkeeper of the 1930's and 1940's, Emil Brunner and his family, whose job it was,  to maintain the government standards with the operation of a lighthouse , at the time. Videos including narration from the daughter of Emil Brunner, Emily, give insight as to what life was like being part of the operation and the path that led them there. Help support the Hudson Athens Presrvation Society in the efforts to restore, preserve and maintain this building for the public to appreciate its history.  Come visit , learn more and tour this gem of the Hudson. A short boat ride will get you there.
