The 2023 season will kick off on Saturday, May 20, with Steven Spielberg’s 2005 remake of H. G. Well’s 1898 sci-fi novel, War of the Worlds. Few know that Spielberg’s riveting ferry scene was filmed just steps away from where our screening will take place.

The film series will continue Saturday, June 17th, with Beeban Kidron’s cult classic, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995), in celebration of Pride Month.

Next up, mark your calendar for Saturday, July 15th—Chloé Zhao’s Oscar-winning feature, Nomadland (2020), follows Frances McDormand's character, Fern, as she navigates the American landscape of the gig economy.

The series continues August 19th with Godfrey Reggio’s breathtaking Koyaanisqatsi (1983), which means, “life out of balance” in Uto-Aztecan language. Scored by Philip Glass and the first of the Qatsi trilogy, this experimental masterpiece was heralded as “a remarkable film event” by the Los Angeles Times, that will be accompanied by a live pre-screening musical set.

The season will finish up on September 16th with the documentary darling of the 2018 film festival circuit—the PBS POV release, 306 Hollywood—by Elan & Jonathan Bogarin. As a touching archival project filled with magical-realist elements, the filmmakers present an imaginative archaeological portrait of their beloved grandmother.

The Third Saturdays Free Film Series was made possible with funds from a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered in Greene County by CREATE Council on the Arts. Further support provided by the FairGame Arts Grant, Athens Community Foundation, and the Stewart House.
