23Arts Summer Music Festival Weekend I: Jazz
The accomplished and accoladed Brianna Thomas delivers this dazzling premiere revamp of the iconic works of legendary ’60s songstress and 2018 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Nina Simone and the “Queen of Gospel” Mahalia Jackson. Simone and Jackson individually crafted worlds of sound in gospels, spirituals, jazz, soul and pop that were inspired by, and honored, the philosophy of Dr. King.
Thomas expertly laces together these uplifting narratives on songs ranging from the passionate and fearless I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free and Feelin’ Good to the celebratory tribute Why? (The King of Love is Dead), written by her bass player Gene Taylor in reaction to the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
